Super and Jacobson (2011) define religious abuse as occurring when a religious leader, or collective group use their power or position within the organization to oppress, manipulate or harm an individual with their beliefs.
Religious trauma is the result of various experiences that comprise of an individual experiencing coercion, humiliation, abuse, and emotional damage within a church, or spiritual community. Often spiritual bypassing is utilized as a coping skill. This is where a spiritual explanation is used to dismiss or avoid difficult emotions or psychological issues, that are the results of religious abuse.
